For Annie to be able to teach Helen she needed to be able to make hand motions in Helen's hand. I think A conflict in the story is when Annie looses being able to touch or get to Helen in any way. She knows how to sign language, but her brain doesn't register it as something. One conflict in the book is between Helen and herself. At the end of the story, when Annie taught Helen how to recognize words and proper manners, she stopped being haunted by her memories, because she had succeeded with Helen. That is one of the reasons why she wouldn't give up on teaching Helen. Annie had let Jimmie down, even though she promised that she wouldn't, so she felt very guilty throughout the story.

Annie is really trying to help Helen, although it is difficult because Helen shows no urge to learn.
